Is there really a difference between NetSuite, QuickBooks, and Sage?

Written by Justin Atneyel

On the face of it, NetSuite, QuickBooks, and Sage might seem similar. After all, they are accounting software programs designed to help automate accounting needs. However, there quite a few differences that need to be understood when researching your software options.

There are pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses of all three platforms. We know, because at Plumb we are experts in all three. Please read on for a brief breakdown of each platform and who might benefit from each.

  • Provides a comprehensive software tool with a CRM tool (customer relationship management), ERP (enterprise resource planning), and e-commerce solutions.
  • Offers a robust platform, with inventory management and budgeting.
  • Scales up to meet the needs of larger businesses.
  • Works with multiple currencies.
  • Pricing is available by contacting NetSuite directly but will be more of an investment than QuickBooks (and possibly Sage, depending on the Sage product) due to the many features and options it delivers.
  • Bottom line: NetSuite is great for larger businesses with multiple users and a high level of transactions.

  • Provides basic accounting tasks such as invoicing and payroll, among other features.
  • Works with domestic US currency only.
  • Organizes financial records, reports, and data into an easy-to-use interface.
  • Offers both desktop and online versions at a relatively low monthly cost.
  • Bottom line: QuickBooks is great for smaller, US-focused businesses who need assistance with basic accounting functions. Businesses like professional services, retail, or SMBs are typical QuickBooks customers.

  • Provides an advanced hybrid and cloud-based accounting system that can be used across a multitude of industries and businesses.
  • Offers tools for both basic accounting needs as well as more complex project management.
  • Delivers many options for personalization and collaboration.
  • Scales up to meet the needs of changing and/or growing businesses.
  • Pricing can be found online and varies depending on the Sage product.
  • Bottom line: Sage is great for companies and organizations who have or work with a CFO or a Controller. Those in CRE, M&D, non-profits or MLBs are typical Sage customers.

With our narrow focus on a few key industries, our extensive knowledge of the software solutions we offer, and our commitment to serving our clients, Plumb can help take your business to the next level.
